This phrase first appeared to the public in 1970 as a piece by poet and prototypical hip-hop artist Gil Scott-Heron.

I love this pin because it reminds me of Gil Scott-Heron's early rap song & album title of the same name. Not many people I knew were fans of Gil's music back in the day as it wasn't mainstream, plus very politically activist, but as a jazz fan I loved his soulful, often heartwrenching baritone voice
