This one actually purchased at my folks' farm auction, off a hayrack of old tools and stuff consigned by a distant uncle's estate. (and thus unavailable to me to 'pick' beforehand...) Think I gave all of $5 for it, since it was just too weird/cool to resist...? <lol>
This is a kinda heavy cast iron spittoon with baked porcelain/enamel finish -- white on the inside and actually a light gray 'speckle' color on the outside. It measures about 9" across and 6" high, and weighs in at nearly 6 pounds. While it obviously has some dings and rusty spots, its in pretty good condition overall once I washed the barn dirt off of it. I have absolutely no idea how old it really is, but have to guess it's probably half again as old as I am, at least...? (1930's-40's?? earlier??) It doesn't seem to have any mfr's ID or anything on it at all.
Has anybody else seen anything like it before? I'm admittedly nobody's expert in spittoons, but it seems like more typical brass ones are commonly found all over -- while I'm not sure I've *ever* seen an enameled iron one??
I haven't seen anything like it. All the spittoons I have seen are brass.
I collected spittoons when I lived up north. The enameled ones were supposed to be easier to clean and were heavy so they didn't tip over. Most brass ones are weighted in the bottom with sand in a sealed compartment. As I recall the enameled ones were most frequently used in motel rooms etc. while the brass ones were out in public gathering places. Five bucks was a steal. I think it is a number of years older than your estimate. I would treat the rust with Extend to stop it.
