These haven't been strung yet - 13" of 12mm and one larger perfect black bead. Not bakelite, possibly old 1940's lucite. When they hit each other the sound is more like a "clunk" than a brittle high-pitch that newer lightweight beads emit. Even running hot water I couldn't get a smell. Plus, they are heavier than normal 50's and later lucite beads, so I think they are good quality pre-50's plastic. The light box picture shows them as matte, but really they are nice and shiny - so I added picture 2 from outside.
Very wonderful and Thank You to Moonstonelover for these beads - I'm sure I'll have fun researching and figuring out what to do with them.
