The woman who is by herself looks to be sporting a dead coyote for a muff! Ratty looking and who would walk down the street like that--much less go to church!
Then there are the two ladies each with a way huge carry all muffs that are beyond ridiculous--and last the woman with the fur neckpiece and matching muff which will carry the Christmas goose and 2 bottles of wine---That photo which I had on earlier, alone, started me looking for this strange fad which I guess replaced gloves!! I seems now I am collecting goofy fur accessories-- Uggh! I will keep on looking because I just can't believe this was a fad lasting over decades.
Thank God this fashion disaster ended--- for many poor animals had come to an end for THIS!!.

      Dead coyote?

Muffs go back before gloves. Though mittens go back further. Muffs were warm, stylish, and statements of wealth. The bigger, more colourful, and thicker, the better. Remember, your Sunday's Best and all showy finery for photographs, as those were a rare thing, too.

      Farm for foxes for fur.

The head and legs are dangling from the muff of the woman on the right in photo # 2. I do recall seeing women wearing stolls (?) with head and legs of a poor dead fox hanging from them. I swear, that is the MOST disgusting sight I can remember as a child-- and I automatically thought the wearer was some kind of witch.

I have a 4-mink stole (thrift-store find). Likely 1950s. Noses, paws, claws-- all still there. Glass eyes. Interesting as an example of history.
At where I spent 11 years, they were donated 3 old, LONG fox-pelts which we showed visitors as examples of what people do to God's creatures.
At Hobby Lobby, an American crafts store, you can still but REAL animal pelts (hare); check the leather aisle. They have all sorts of interesting things. In the jewelry section, you can buy vintage and antique watch parts. An amusing bottle-opener they sell involves sticking the bottle between a bear's legs and jerking it up. Like, OUCH!!

A farm for the raising of foxes for killing-- for the pleasure of rich women???
Now I can't eat lunch. . Obviously I am a crusader against animal fur for coats. And the protest has become a help in securing animal rights. If I see a woman wearing real fur... I "sneer" at her.(But I wish I had an egg!) There are fake furs which are just as nice.I have only the one photo of a muff with animal parts hanging off.

I'm okay with using old furs, but I don't support any trade of fur from this or future centuries. What's here is here and done. We can use what we have and not abuse anymore.

Up to now, I haven't seen animal fur in the aisles of thrift stores here--but in the desert cities of AZ. furs are just not worn. A heavy sweater can get us through anything that winter brings.
Thanks for your interesting response SpiritBear.

I once had a wind-breaker that kept me warm down to 10 degrees F no sweat (or freeze). LOL. Loved that thing.

That is just what I mean!!! There are other ways off fighting off the cold.
I was born & raised in Chicago and my mom never had a fur coat, nor my grandmother. I got this way over animals because of my dad. If he saw a guy beating his dog, my dad would run outside and knock his block off. I get all riled up if I see anybody mistreating an animal. I have called the Az Humane Society here several times. And I have been confrontational many times. 5 feet, and small...but I feel like the hulk in those instances.

Both my mom and I pray whenever we see a dead animal. Lots of roadkill up here.
    11. PostCardCollector PostCardCollector, 7 years ago
OH! I love you and your mom!!!
I am the person who scrapes the road kill off the road on my street, he-men run the other way. No one else will even help me. It shocks me that I have the grit to do that---then someone else will dig a grave on my property. 100 years from now when making a new development workers digging a foundation will think a real loony lived here, or it was a pet cemetery. But no headstones at least. Plenty tears washed over it all tho..
    12. SpiritBear, 7 years ago
My mom used to as well. We have a lot of crows, though, that do it around this town.
Around our yard are many graves for unknown animals that were killed.

EEEK What remnant of what animal is hanging from the hat of woman in photos 1 &4?? THAT has got to be a "Fashion Statement" that did not catch on!!
    15. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 7 years ago
I'm wondering if the animal is dead in the 1st. shot ?
    16. PostCardCollector PostCardCollector, 7 years ago
What knocks me out is the unruly condition of it. Wouldn't she think of grooming it before handling it !It looks like my cat after a really bad fight.
blunderbuss2 wonders if the animal is actually dead yet,Photo 1 & 4 --I think that tail hanging down is still moving in the photo!!OMG!
I am going hunting for more bad fashion-muff photos today-- I'll bet no one else would be collecting these. Ya think?

to show how good they are at strangling furry animals?
    18. PostCardCollector PostCardCollector, 7 years ago
I think for how totally irrational and absurd this "fashion fad" is to reasonable people today--- and to thank God women have come a long way in realizing the inhumane lengths they went to back when and how bizarre actions affect the sensibilities of women today.
These are dead animals--and there isn't a thing anyone can do about it. Just hope that calling some attention to past errors may help them being repeated,
But if you are offended by this==I can understand. When the Anti- animal cruelty commercials come on TV and the suffering living dogs are shown, I leap across the room and turn the TV off,,,so I can commiserate with you--and I will show no more animal muffs. That is OK with me.
    19. ho2cultcha ho2cultcha, 7 years ago
i was being somewhat facetious. i'm not offended by these at all. i think furs are cruel, but not offensive. interesting post.

Thanks! Maybe these posts extend the awareness of what occurred in the past ans further the cause that this never happens again,
