Well, I saw an interesting estate sale posted for today and decided to go. They had a lot of Asian inspired items and other things. I saw this piece sitting on the table and picked it up. It is very heavy for its size and has a heavy glass lid that lifts up. I had not seen a piece like this before, so I asked the lady there what it was. She told me that it was a European container that would hold communion wafers. They told me that it was probably around 100 years old. Unfortunately there is a crack/break in the glass, but I still think it was worth the price I paid. I tried to do a little research, but did not see anything exactly like this. I saw a similar one that was a traveling communion set that had a built-in cup and storage area for the wafers. Does anyone know if this is indeed a wafer holder or what it might be? Also any guesses on the age

i think it is a ciborium or maybe a monstrance? it's been so many years since i was an altar boy, that i get them all mixed up now. whatever it is, it's pretty cool!

Isn't a ciborium a chalice? Coming from a long line of Catholics, I'm sad to say I have no idea what this is. My daughter was an altar server for years, (in my day a girl doing this service was unheard of) and she would hold the chalice or a bowl for the priest. I would think that this is antique (100+ years old) and if it is a Eucharist Holder, then to me it would be priceless.
      Beautiful!

Ms. Crystal, thanks for your comment. I still have yet to find anything that looks like this. I just know that it appears pretty old and has stunning detail.

this one is described as a silver overlay dresser jar at LiveAuctioneers:

Tallcakes, wow, finally another picture that looks like mine. I did not even consider a dresser jar. I wonder what this piece would have held. Thank you so much :)
