    Unknown Gound in uncles home in New York area Has felt pad in middle and hand squeeze to loosen and tighten. Has yellow rubber on arm that swings open and closed.

      I forget the exact name of it (somebody here will know, for sure!) but its a thing guitar players use. It clamps around the fretboard of the guitar having the effect of raising the tuned musical 'pitch' of the entire instrument.

      Thanks guys. Si is that definitely what it is? He was from Italy so maybe he played guitar there when he was young. Thanks for the help

      Yep just found out he had a mandolin and banjo in his closet!! Thanks again!

      Thanks for the reminder slackjack, you're quite correct (I did keyboard instruments instead of stringed/strummed ones myself...) and Jackietools, it would indeed perform the same basic function (musically) for both a mandolin and banjo in addition to geetars, that of 'transposing' the whole instrument up a few musical half-steps or so depending on exactly where one would clamp it onto their 'axe'. ;-) :-)
