Though I mainly collect European art glass and embroidered linens, I also have some other bits and bobs, this being one of my favorites… a massive and very heavy clay Socialist-Realist sculpture by Frantisek Mentlik (b. 1914 d.1965 Czechoslovakia).
It depicts a woman, with strong legs and rather manly hands, working exceptionally hard moving large bricks. I assume it was made sometime between 1948 and the early 1960s.
Weight: close to 10kg
My husband, who happened to grow up in ‘Soviet’ Poland, dislikes it greatly, but I think it’s fabulous. Its size alone is impressive, and the figure fascinating – she’s a much stronger woman than I could ever be.
