Sometimes still spotted by the cash register in restaurants/diners (or other generally small businesses) spindles like these were often used to hold the (hopefully) growing stack of paid receipts through a business day, which in turn would all get 'impaled' on it by a cashier.

This one has a kinda fancy cast iron base under green paint, about 2-3/8" at its widest. The spindle is 5-1/2" tall or so. Cast into the underside of the base are the words "MADE IN U.S.A." and number "11". Probably dates from the first half of the 1900's sometime, but that's just a guess.

Nowadays, I think it makes a rather nifty 'ring holder', on my dresser top...? ;-) :-)
