I just bought this great old tool and would like to know it's use and how it worked. The tag said it was related to making an axle for wagons. As you can see one side is made to sit on a circular surface and the other side is similar to a compass with a thumb screw for adjustment. There are several holes in the wood so either side can be moved, the different adjustments range from 25 1/4 to 58 1/4.

I sent these pictures to Hansen Wheel and Wagon Shop and they identified it as an axle gauge and stated "it is important for an axle to be gauged correctly for the dish of the wheels so that the wheel will run true! Thanks to everyone looking!
