This beautiful wooden box belonged to my great grandmother. The top lifts up and the sides swing open. It looks like a burl veneer, with brass hinges and hardware. Most of the decorations on the box are nailed on. The decorations are metal and mother of pearl.
I know that my great grandmother had the box back in the 60s, but I'm told that it is much older than that.
Does anyone have an idea what this type of box was meant to be used for? Or when it might have been made?

Wish my grandmother had had such interesting things! It does not really look suited to jewelry. It does have some resemblance to a writing slope/lap desk. In the second photo, are all the sections open as far as they will go? Or can the bottom 2 be made to lie flat?
What are the dimensions of the box. Is it heavy?

I agree it doesn't really look suitable for jewelry. I just can't figure out what it might have been good for! I took a new photo with all of the sections opened as far as they will go. The bottom of the box has a 1.5 inch lip, so I'm not certain that it would have been useful as a desk. Maybe to hold stationary and an ink bottle?

The box is not heavy, maybe a pound or two. The measurements are 11"tall, 13.5 inches across the front of the box and 9.75 inches deep.
