We purchaed this at an estate sale recently - this piece was a throw in with some other items. When we brought it home and examined it more closely, we suspected it might be from the American brilliant period. As you can see it is beautifully cut, with an 8-pointed star appearing in the center of the bottom stand and on the side as well. There are diamond shapes made of criss-cross paterns around the bottom plate and octagon shapes of cross-patterns on the cover.

The bottom stand is about 10 1/2" W and the stand with cover is about 6 1/2".

Would love to know if this is a contemporary piece, or something more interesting!

I’m wondering if this butter bowl is the “whirling star” pattern by either Fostoria or Imperial Glass ?!?!

      Thanks TimeTraveller,

I'll use that info to investigate!

10 1/2" is very large for a butter dish.

I believe now that it is a cheese plate based on the rim on the plate.

Cakes are not usually presented on this type of domed plate. Who said it was a butter dish, 'cos I went with that. But, now the owners think a cake plate.

Here are some Fostoria cake stands:

Mmmmm...a cheese plate eh? Possible, highly possible.

I inherited this same piece from my mother. At first I thought it was a cake plate, but the center rimmed area is about 7" which is small for a cake and would make it hard to cut. Not sure about it being a cheese plate, as suggested. All I know is that my mother purchased it at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA in the late 70's (not sure of the date).

Not American Brilliant. Cheese dish most likely.

I have the same item purchased from EBay It is too small for cake with icing even if the cake is 6" because of the rim on the plate. I love this, just keep it on my counter to keep small items such as cup cakes and cheese but do not allow anyone to cut the cheese as I do not want any knife marks. It was advertised as American brilliant. My set is very heavy, weighs over 10 lbs. Diameter of t he dome is ver 8". Am now looking for a dome to use with my Duncan Miller 3 sisters cake plate.
