Whatever it was it is a cat bed now. I put it on the floor and they scrunched it up into a bed. Works for me.
It may be a fox but I am thinking coyote, seems a bit large for a fox. It is a fine felt and rather fluffy and has nice color. Must be a mountain coyote. The ones I used to see when I lived in the flatlands were short haired and a bit shyer. Up here you look at them and they look at you but they do not want to be hugged and squeezed.

Possibly a hybrid? We have coyote mixed with wolf's here in upstate New York. They aren't as shy of people and much bigger and fluffier. They come right into town and snatch cats and small dogs. People here are going crazy about it lately.
Thank you very much Lamplover78. People here don't keep small dogs or cats outside. And they carry golf clubs, baseball bats etc when walking their dogs. .
