In September a house down the street from us was set to be demolished, still with a bunch of stuff in it, so I begged the contractor & property-owner to let me go in and scavenge fixtures/whatever, before everything wound up in the dump. I rescued a bunch of great stuff, including these rugs, which are unlike any other embroidery I've seen before - these are made entirely with what I think are called a chain-stitch (?), and a separate flat burlap/jute (?) backing. I have been trying to figure out where they may have originated, so if anybody has any ideas I'd love some feedback!

LOL! Now that's what I'm talkin about!!! You talked your way right in there. Nice going! And wow, this looks like it's crocheted or knitted... one or the other. Definitely looks to be hand stitched and absolutely gorgeous!

Anticipating the other goodies you found in your next post!

shareurpassion, yes they were/are a super-score. The house had been vacant for at least a year or more, many broken windows, etc., and homeless had been camping out. I found the rugs on the bathroom floor surrounded by drug paraphernalia, i.e. someone had probably been using them as bedding (so even more intriguing, where a homeless drug addict found them - ??). Still have no idea where they're from, although a friend posted a link to 'Suzani' rugs from Uzbekistan that also use the chain-stitch (which prompted me to make this post), and then I found other similar ones from India, so now thinking they might be central- or south-Asian (??). The most confounding thing is that the pale/pink colours & designs are very different from all the others I could find online.
