OK sports fans, here is another mystery I recently acquired. I have no idea what they are and neither did the seller at the junk store.
I purchased two out of the several they had. They were in various sizes, some as small as about 1/2 '' diameter. These are about 2 1/2 and 3" diameter.
They appear to fit into a chuck by the square on the shank.

Hello "OLBob": Do the open end caps rotate independently of the grooved pattern pieces? Are the grooved pattern pieces fixed to the shafts?

The disc section with the teeth does appear to be removable from the shaft.
I do not believe the caps rotate independently, there is the screw which seems to hold it in place. Plus they are so rusted that they don't move anyway.
I wish I had purchased one of the other ones in the group photo. There are a few without the caps and they have different teeth on the perimeter of the disc.

Also note the small hole in the bottom of the square end of the shaft.

My guess is the small hole was to hold the shaft during manufacturing on a lathe with a "live center."
