Does anyone know what this is? I purchased a bag of military pins/badges today and it was included in the collection.

It is a US Air Force rank for a Staff Sergeant or E-5.

You don't mention the size, but the odd pin and construction is not typical of a standard insignia.

I am not sure of the intended purpose.

Metal insignia pins were issued in pairs and would have been worn on the collar lapels of the uniform. These pins were also issued in subdued battle dress uniform colors. Your pin looks a bit flimsy. and the pin itself is vertical rather than horizontal. The vast majority of these insignia pins have a push pin back. I have seen a few with the pin back like yours, but horizontal rather than vertical. Judging from the size of your fingertip on the end of the pin, this particular one seems much too large to be worn in the collar lapel.
