      I had a pin similar to this and an antique dealer told me that it was probably a "mourning pin" -- featuring a photo of a person who died. A clipping of their hair might be wound around the inside of the border as a keepsake. I don't know for sure, but that is what a dealer told me.

      I have seen a lot of these. I think they are some version of remembrance/mourning jewelry. Popular in late Victorian, and a little later, I have a few, and have seen later ones that are much bigger. Still, an interesting slice of history.

      Agree with others. I collect and deal in antique photographs and come across these with regularity. Most are late 19th/ very early 20th century.

      I have some that have been passed down in my family from around 1900 and none of the people in them died around that time. Most went on to live for decades.
