The first Sci Fi book I read was Slan, by A E Van Vogt and I think I was around 10. Left a lasting impression on me. I don't think I have read The Crysalids though.

So glad you're feeling good and out and about for a walk. We had about three inches of snow yesterday a.m. Today and tomorrow, lots of rain! I can't wait for sunshine and warm temps.

so just managed to work how to turn piccy right way up

My grade 7 English teacher used to read part of a chapter The Chrysalids to us at the end of class as a treat. Then she stopped partway through, leaving us to find the ending for ourselves. So many of us queued up to borrow it for weeks on end; it was possibly the highest-demand book in the entire school library! I went on to read the rest of Wyndham's books, but this remains a favourite, thanks to his fabulous and highly memorable world-building.
