Yesterday, I chaperoned a field trip on which my son went with the music classes at his school. When you live 90 minutes outside NYC and you're in school, your field trips are going to Broadway or Lincoln Center or museums. Not too shabby, huh? This time, we saw Hello, Dolly with Bernadette Peters. It was a great show. Next trip is to Lincoln Center for Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty and Sibelius' violin concerto.
If we arrive early with time to spare, the chaperones usually let the kids have free time as long as they meet us at the theater a half hour before the show. I was with three other parents and with over an hour before we had to meet back at the theater, we found our way to an out-of-the-way food court several flights up (with a virtually empty bathroom in the basement- a TREASURE!) where the doughnut photo was taken. I didn't partake, but the doughnuts were too scrumptious looking not to photograph. They made regular sized doughnuts look like doughnut holes! There was also a sushi bar with extremely fresh sushi, Mexican food (where you watched them make tortillas by hand on a press), green lemonade (lemonade with mint, which I did have, and it was delicious), noodle bowls, and other uniquely delicious fare.
The Empire State Building photo was taken on the bus on the way out of the city. It was a perfect view/perfect photo op, especially stuck in rush hour traffic.

What a lovely excursion! How was Ms Peters in the show, I heard she gives great live performances. My last Bway show was at least fifteen yrs ago, saw Marilyn McCoo (5th Dimension) in Show Boat. Will you see the ABT in Sleeping Beauty, love the ballet - these are great cultural experiences for your son and his classmates

What a wonderful field trip and I would volunteer to go on all the field trips if I was going to NY NYC ! Now I am also hungry :-)
It reminds me of being in the big apple and seeing some big shows and on the streets
there were many old stars like Mary Martin standing on stage outdoors as they were trying to save a lot of the old theatres which were closing. The big appple is always so very vibrant !~
Oh Laura, I'm jealous!! I was in NYC several times back in the late 1980's and 19990's for business. Every time I went there, it was a matter of finishing up business and catching a flight to my next call. So, I never got to see the wonderful things that NYC has to offer. I want one of those doughnuts:) I've always loved Bernadette Peters, and you're very lucky to get to see her live in a Broadway show. So, glad you had such a wonderful time in the BIG Apple! I love all your pics!
That is the ultimate city so I hear. Maybe I will make it there some day.

Manikin, I am lucky to be able to go on these trips. They're such wonderful excursions, especially being able to see the kids enjoy themselves. When my son was in sixth grade, the school took the kids to the Museum of Natural History. My son had been before, but so many kids had never been, let alone set foot in the city.
Phil, now those are memories! Wow! The old theaters--- works of art in and of themselves. I am just awed by the architecture and the lighting. One just has to look at them to know that attention to detail was paramount for those that designed and built these theaters.
Scott, I'm so glad you've enjoyed the photos. Now, you have to come to the city for a vacation and spend some time there! Yes, I feel very lucky I was able to see Bernadette! When she descended the staircase and they sang
"Hello, Dolly," it was, well, GRAND!
Fortapache, yes, you should try to visit. There are so many facets to the city and so many things to do, I think it would be impossible NOT to find something that interests you. There are even the famous Hell's Kitchen and Chelsea flea markets- something for all of us CW people!

Lets see.....umm..the last time I was in NYC was probably 1973..LOL ,I drove there to see my sister graduate from college, we took the subway to the Empire State Building and also took the boat ride around the Statue of Liberty, good memories!

Nice post Laura, and a great field trip, to be able to go on, with the School! :^D I think that I'd have to get one of those doughnuts though, and save it for the bus trip back, and eat it in front the students to show them what they missed! They look scrumpdilliumpsous!:^)

Thank you for the nice comments, Bill. Yes, we are very lucky to be so close to the city and to be able to take the kids on these trips. My friend got a doughnut to bring back with her but ended up taking it all the way home instead of eating it on the bus. It's funny, most of the kids all gravitate to Starbucks or McDonald's and shirk the new and unique foods. One of the kids, though, is the son of a professional chef and he headed for one of the food trucks.

Great photography, Laura!! I love every picture. I'd like to experience that feeling you're describing going on a field trip with the kids and trying to see the city with their eyes. Sadly, i've lost that excitement about it some time ago. I come there every day for work and all I see is garbage everywhere, and a new glass skyscraper popping up almost daily, gradually eliminating magnificent architecture of older buildings. When I go to places in the city i haven't visited in years, i don't find them the way i remember them, they turn into faceless cloned glass/brick blocks. Sometimes i wish i could go back in time and enjoy it the way it used to be, the wild and free spirit it used to have. My kid likes it, though, we take him to the Natural Museum (dinosaurs, here we come!...again, and again =), Christmas Spectacular, etc. There are still lots of things to experience for kids. He asked me last time to take him to the 9/11 memorial, but i wasn't ready to go there myself. I promised him -some day.
Anna, thank you for your kind compliment. I loved reading about your impressions of the city. We moved here just about 12 years ago so I've not experienced the change as much as you have. I'd been to the city a couple of times prior to moving up here, and I remember it was not the same as it is now. It's almost a living thing, the city itself, because it's filled with such life and movement and constant, visible change.
My son wanted to go to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum several years ago when he was probably around 12 years told. We were going in and staying over as I was attending a fountain pen club meeting and he wanted to go as well. We also went to MOMA, which definitely lightened up the mood after the memorial, but it was a very, very difficult visit. I did not take him to the area where there are photos as I thought it would be too intense for him (and for me as I was already really very emotional after everything else).
