Last weekend, I celebrated the Earth Day scouting and picking through the piles of household items left on the roadside by the town residents for the annual spring cleanup. I look forward to this activity every April since the stuff you find discarded by people ranges from unbelievable to jaw-dropping.
This antique Larkin Co. curio cabinet, along with another vintage furniture set, was put out by our neighbor. I'm deeply thankful to the guy as he took care loading and unloading it, with the hardware included, etc, as if he hoped that someone would "adopt" it. And i absolutely did! Except the one leg that had to be attached, the cabinet just needed dusting and light cleaning. My dream for a cabinet for my dolls has finally come true. That's the happy part of my post. Now, the sad part is that every year doing this, i see how much stuff people discard- furniture old and new, toys, baby gear, strollers and cribs, electronics, household items- a lot of them barely used, with toys having the tags still attached. Why, people, why? There are charities, there are so many people in need of these things, but it all goes to a truck, gets crushed on a spot, and then on to a landfill. I used to take anything in good condition indiscriminately, and either sell it on CL or donate it, but i no longer have the time to do this. My husband picks up pressure-washers, mowers, dehumidifiers, bicycles, power-tools in fine working condition or which need just a minor tweaking. What happened to fixing things? Offering them to a handy neighbor? Yea, i've heard, the economy thing. Still I don't think i will ever understand.

What a gorgeous antique wood cabinet Anna, super find, and you have a beautiful doll collection that looks perfect inside. Isn't it great to have a protective cabinet for your treasures. I think there are many possible reasons why people just put furniture out on the curb rather than other ways - maybe they are moving in a hurry, unable to lift a heavy piece to transport, just lazy etc. Whatever the reason, good news for you!

Anna great save. We have a big barn at the landfill that you can drop off anything that can be reused. It is amazing how much we waste. I try to buy anything that I can used. Have a great day and thank you very much for sharing:)

Oh how wonderful to have such a great cabinet for your dolls :-) We used to have that annual pick up here too but they stopped it . And yes lots of great items were thrown out I often found things I could use and save , I miss it . Many times people just find it easier to throw on curb than drive to a charity :-( I am glad you rescued this wonderful piece and your dolls look very happy too !

Beautiful cabinet Anna! We just had spring cleanup and it really amazes me what people will throw out. One of our neighbors had a dining room table and chairs sitting on the curb to be picked up. It was gone by the next morning.

Anna, what a gorgeous cabinet and gorgeous dolls, too! I am so happy for you! I agree; what happened to fixing things? We live in such a disposable society.

Thank you all for stopping by, your love and generous comments. I've been really busy lately and don't always get to respond timely.

Malkey, sending many blessings and good wishes your way!

Jenni, yes, you're right, whatever the reason, i'm pretty happy with my find! =))

Roy, i wish we had a barn like that. I hear other towns do. I also try to re-use/repurpose/fix things but i feel like my efforts are just a drop in an ocean.

Ken, thank you, the dolls really do look like they belong there. Sometimes if you're just a little patient, the Universe seems to send you the thing you want =)

Mani, I wonder if you can petition your officials to reinstate the program... If enough people want it back, I think it's worth trying to make it happen.

      Fortapache- thank you, agreed!

Scott, my point exactly. Have you ever found anything interesting this way?

Laura- thank you for your compliments. Agreed about the last part... #sad
