My niece found this 8"x5" tin while clearing out a farmhouse in Iowa. It is marked "manufactured by Artstyle Chocolate Company Boston St. Louis USA". After doing a little online research I found it is from the 20's-30's. There are at least 15 images so this butterfly motif was popular. (Also popular and fitting on Mother's Day, "Dear Mother" tin) There are 4 slots in the lid which I believe held a paper or ribbon handle - possibly imprinted Artstyle Chocolates? If anyone can help me solve the mystery of the slots, please do :-)

And, the Amgen Tour of California race is happening outside right now. Ocean Blvd is quiet except for the whoosh of bikers and their support teams following behind. Kind of neat and relates to butterflies a little......

I love this old chocolate tin! Far better than the cardboard boxes we get in today's world.

I agree Scott - the old tins are so wonderful!! And they were kept to store money, trinkets, memories.....Someone recently posted pristine tobacco can examples on CW. Beautiful litho tin art!! https://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/247909-tobacco-tins-and-an-old-crayon-tin?in=523-activity

Love the butterflies painted on this tin, they look great after so many yrs and would be a great memory box storage. Hope you had a wonderful relaxing Mother's Day Mary, mine was very low key and nice (stepdaughter & family live in Fla, though they called)

Jenni - thank you for your comments! I love old tins and cigar boxes. I'm not a mom except to my 3 birds, in fact watching a kitty while her mom is visiting humans this weekend. Yes, it has been relaxing and perfect cool weather here in the LBC. :-)

Lovely! Before I read your description, I thought it was Asian!

Love it I have one just like it and believe there must have been a butterfly that stood up on top of it in a empty slot . Very nice !

Tigra - thank you for your nice comment.

Laura - thank you, it's a common tin by this company. Mine is a rough example, but I love it because it was loved and used!

Mani....do you think so? Would it have been a paper butterfly?....seems like this is a handle slot and it wasn't special enough to keep. Do you have any info on yours?

Thank you friends for loving the butterflies: MyCountry, Clockerman, Kevin, Judy, Mike, Thomas, Fort, Ken, Ivonne, Roy and Aura :-)

I think there were paper butterflies or something ,a handle makes no sense and that we both have one with something missing seems to be that whatever it was got destroyed easy or it came off when box was first opened ? I have always wondered myself and glad to see another .

Hi Mani - yes, we'll figure it out. Someone out there has the original tin or an advertisement that shows it. I searched a long time with no luck :-)

Loves also to friends Sean, Windwalker and Share :-)

The slot was for a green handle.
    12. valentino97 valentino97, 2 years ago
Hello procellp53 - was it a green fabric ribbon? probably? Thank you for posting!

I forgot to thank procellp53 for solving the mystery. Also thank you friends for your loves of this sweet old tin.

My mother has this tin, and it has been an object of my fascination since I was a very little girl! She found hers at a flea market in Kansas City in the 1980s, and always told me that - YES! - there were originally little butterflies that stood in the slots on top! I believe these were metal also, though I will have to double check with her, as it seems odd that none appear to have survived! Perhaps they were meant to be worn as brooches or hair accessories?

Thanks Littleduck!! I'm very excited to know about the butterflies in the slots being clips or brooches. Is your mom's perfect? As you can see mine is a little worn :-)
