Your hand fits in the slot for grasping. It opens and closes easily. Used for. ? grabbing something or shredding or. ? Any ideas

Maybe for grabbing nails out of a parts bin in an old hardware store.

The idea of grabbing nails out of a bin is spot on----maybe grabbing other similar items to weigh to fill an order
