I found this circa 1890 Gorham perfume bottle in a vacated apartment. When I first saw it I thought it was from the dollar store, lol! From online searches, I found out it's rare. It's in a red cranberry color with silver overlay and measures 5 1/4" tall. My question to this community, is what's the best way to clean it? Thanks for looking and have a good day.

Gorgeous red glass & silver filigree design perfume bottle, pretty stopper too, nice find! I'm not the best restorer Ken, with my glass I usually clean any smudges or dirt off with those wet wipes which are pretty gentle, in this case maybe squeeze onto q-tips to just clean the glass then paper towel wipe off.

Jenni, your cleaning techniques sound really good! Do you know what's the best way to polish the silver? Thanks for helping. :)

What a great find.I have one in emerald green with the sterling overlay that I found at a church sale. I have a lot of small silver objects and when I get in the mood to clean them I use a silver polishing cloth which i get at Walmart in the jewelery department.

Believe it or not, a soak in warm water, then rinsed, and let dry on a towel a bit. Buff dry with soft cloth. This will remove any dirt on the surfaces and a bit of the tarnish. If you want it even brighter after that, use the gentle silver cleaners, cloth or liquid and wash again. Really beautiful Ken, great find!

Hi Ken, without the email notification of course I am late answering your question about cleaning the silver, sorry about that. Well for real sterling, it is good to mix white vinegar with some baking soda, once it fizzes it is ready, then you can soak (or cloth apply, if no loosening of debris needed) for a little while & use a toothbrush to remove any embedded debris - if you are worried the vinegar is too abrasive, try fresh squeezed juice of a couple lemons. Afterward dip in a basin of clean water then dry off. If worried this may be corrosive to an old piece, the gentler way is as described by truthordare above, but you can add dish soap (be sure the ingredients are mild, no citric acid) to the warm water. It's a gorgeous bottle, so watch it carefully whatever you use & it should be fine - p.s., none of this soaking will harm the glass, just clean it better lol

Most beautiful bottle. Being into old silver jewelry I would go for silvercleaning from the jewelry store. To make sure you don't get any marks or scratches on the silver.
