This German Beer Stein was brought from Germany by my great grandparents in 1871. Would like to know what it is worth and some information about it if anyone knows.

This is a Villory & Boch etched stoneware stein made at their Mettlach, Germany factory. The text reads “Alt Heidelberg du feine, du Stadt an Ehren reich, am Neckar und am Rhein, keine andre kommt dir gleich.” (Old Heidelberg you fine city, rich in honors, on the Neckar and Rhine, no other can equal you.) Text is taken from a poem honoring Heidelberg, written in 1853 by Joseph Viktor von Scheffel and set to music in 1872 by Weise von Zimmerman. This stein can be found both with and without a banner under the handle containing the dates 1386 to 1886, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the founding of the University of Heidelberg.

The price range in mint condition is $300 to $400. On eBay it will be in the lower range and in a stein auction catalog it will be in the higher range. These prices include the commission which can be as high as 30% in a stein auction catalog. Visit http://www.steincollectors.org to learn more about antique German beer steins.
