Came across this antique trunk at a local garage sale for 75 bucks. We were told it was from the 1800’s and we’re curious to know if the information is true. Either way a cool find! If anyone has any information on the age we’d sure appreciate it. Thanks for reading!

This style of trunk was called a Monitor trunk or a water fall trunk, front and back edges rounded, this one is probably from early 1900's. It had what was called a crystallized tin finish looks like it was gold in color, greendog.
VERY nice, original condition American made travel trunk. Probably from the late 1890's to the early 1900's. Yes these were called metal/zinc covered Monitor top trunks, or square trunk with rounded corners. The term "waterfall" was one coined long after these trunks were made, and not a name used by trunk makers. While many of these had a finish of crystalized hot dip tin finish, many were called zinc covered, which has the same appearance as galvanized metal. They were then coated with tinted shellac, usually gold in color. Hope this helps,
