One of the first books I read about American slavery practices, while I was in high school in Quebec. I knew nothing about this, so it was a completely odd accounting, treating Africans people like farm stock.

My family lived in the same area of Kentucky during the period when this book is set and Shelby was a popular given name in my family. It was quite a shocker when I read this book. Like the Shelbys, my family is of Welsh origins and interacted with the Shelbys on the Virginia and Kentucky frontiers but came to America 70 or 80 years before the Shelbys did. I googled for first editions of this book and they look quite different than your copy, so it is apparently not a first edition. I can't explain the lack of dates. Is the publisher or place of publishing listed in the book?
