I've met Wallace several times & he was very impressive. His memory for faces & names was to be envied. Even with the smear campaign against him, he might have won. He kept his promises.
He didn't keep all of them-- "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever"!
I am not a fan-- although he changed a lot in his later years.

I sure remember those "The Archies" jellyjar glasses -- they were what I usually had my breakfast OJ outta when I was a kid! [and "The Archies" was a current Saturday morning TV show... <groan>]
Scott, that was his stance against the federalists, not a promise. Please don't become a history revisionist. The NAACP backed him & blacks kept him in the Governor's office. He always kept his promises, even when they might hurt him politically. In an irrational moment, he promised to stand in the door of the U of A, and did it with as much grace as could be shown for a bad remark. He helped the blacks & they trusted him. Since I assume, you weren't at ground zero, let's drop politics & move on to religion. LOL !
Citing facts hardly makes me a revisionist.
I would add that Wallace had many irrational moments-- if that is how you are going to characterize his racist rhetoric.

Product of the times.
My mother worked for the State of Alabama. She knew Wallace when he was just a lawyer. He can be debated 24/7 about his character etc. One thing was certain, he knew how to win an election. I've lived in Alabama most if my life, you would be surprised at hiw many African-Americans attended hus fyneral. Not to jeer, not to celebrate but to pay their respects. I don't think Wallace ever forgot someone's name.
It wouldn't surprise me.
Later in life, Wallace admitted that his racist stances were wrong and apologized/ asked for forgiveness.
