From the 1960s, this street sign came from the city of New York. Once located in the vicinity of a school, it indicated a play street, in which was closed to vehicular traffic at a specific time in the school year. Play streets offer children safe areas for recreational activites without interference of vehicular traffic. Such streets still exist today in New York City under the Department of Transportation.
