That is a real beauty. The size is great!

Looks to be oak and I would date it from about the 1890s- first quarter, 20th century.

it looks like a desk w/ a very particular purpose, although i have no idea what that is.

Wow! Very nice piece. Definitely hand carved, Scot probably has the age right, may even be older. I would think it would be along the lines of a secretary desk. Does it appear that a seat may have been able to have been pulled out from the top of the bottom half??? Many times when you look underneath furniture there may be a stamp or a plate with a name on it. Also, it's possible that the whole inside shelves at one time may have been able to pull them out...possibly. I would imagine if that were true, they would now be stuck so I wouldn't really try that to much. You could give a gentle pull. Look on the inside to see if there was once a mechanism there for a seat. It's very special!

Perhaps a cabinet for sheet music.

I would agree with scottvez but lean more toward the teens or 20's. I do not believe this was hand carved. There are no chase marks nor the usual small imperfections you find in hand carved pieces. It is a well done and handsome piece for sure.
