Built in 1869 of adobe brick on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah the observatory was used to establish correct time for the area. This photo is from 1897 the year the observatory was closed. There is currently a replica of the building nearby built in 2001. This is an original 8 X 10 print mounted on cardboard.

Why didn't they just look on their laptop ? The establishing of time zones is fairly recent in history & interesting. The railroads were behind it because every town had a diff. time set by sextant etc. and rail schedules couldn't be established. It's still not perfect with some places having 1/2 hr. differences & not all having DST. I live in Atlantic Time & we don't use DST. Maybe it's because we don't have a railroad. LOL !
