    Nice US Civil War token slightly larger than a quarter. Gustavus Lindenmueller New York, 1863. Looks like a beer stein on the back.

      When the Civil War came on the scene, the U.S. gov't. was basically broke & couldn't afford to issue coins. 80-85% of the wealth was in the South and had to be stolen before any serious amounts of coins could be put in circulation. That didn't work so well since the war debt was so large. Businesses made their own coins/tokens to keep business going. These tokens seem to hold a collector's value well, as does orig. Confederate money.
