Very nice double lock. I don't believe its a Martin. Should clean up nicely.

The guys on this site would be better than me as far as info about this trunk. I have one similar to this. Double click on my name above under " Love it " at the top and look for my double lock listed as " Black Mental 1800's Trunk. The guys gave me some very informative information that you may be able to use. Let me know how it goes.

Ok, I will try to help you out here, trunk is around mid 1880's give or take a bit, without a makers label hard to say who it was made by, hardware is mostly C.A. Taylor, patented 1877, it has a star double lock, trunk has been painted brown at some time, looks like someone has applied some kind of adhesive vinyl to the trunk, it appears to be peeling up around the edges, I would say that this was originally what they called a crystallized tin, gold was the most common color but came in others, looked similar to a frosted window but in color. very nice interior at one time, could be restored, most of the time you will not find a trunk that looks exactly like one you have, I have seen twin trunks, but not often, much of the same trunk hardware was used by everyone, you could have two trunks that looked identical and be made by two different makers. Hope this a little, greendog.
