      How big is it? Without a makers label you will never know who made it. Date could be anywhere from 1880 - 1920's regardless of the 1872 patent date on the latches. If one was to pay fifty dollars for it.... its more than I would pay. Actually I would have kept on walking. No disrespect intended. I asked the size as that would indicate if it is a doll's trunk which would have more merit value wise then a 28" 30" etc. regular trunk. Others may disagree, but this is may take and I am sure I am not to far off the mark.

      It looks to be in fairly good shape ( good bones ). If this belonged to your grandfather, I would attempt to restore it and keep it in the family. The patterns are cool and it should restore nicely. Good luck!
