A pair of beautiful (in my eyes) and quality built Oak chairs found locally in Canada .The use of Robertson screws suggest Canadian manufacture and if anyone can identify maker /designer please give your self a hug. The impressed mark reads 94 G
I like the chairs. They look sturdy and well made. Nice detail in the upholstered back!
From the bottom pictures, I don't think they were truely limed but have a greyish coating applied over the original finish.
But nice, anyway!
I am wondering if the back was originally upholstered? Did you acquire it recently?
Thanks for the love and comments ,I did recently buy them at the local Flea Market as they were priced at $10 Canadian each in as shown condition . The last thing I needed was 2 more chairs but the quality was there! The finish I described as limed, loosely speaking ,but it seems original .
Sorry I've had another look at the golden oak finish underneath which is puzzling as it wouldn't be fashionable in 50/60s?
Well you can’t beat that price!! I would say they that the medium stain ( minus that white wash) was probably original as in North America (and the UK) they were using oak and walnit and staining it to mimic the tones of the teak Mid-century modern pieces coming from Scandinavia.
I would remove the upholstery, which was obviously done by an amateur, and you will get a better idea of what you have. If there's any horsehair stuffing, save it.
You don’t have much invested in them, and they are certainly useable, but if you plan to sell them, a nice profit will be made from have them professionally upholstered.
I have a chair of similar form, from the Johnson chair Company of Chicago, which later became part of Gunlocke. When I got one reupholstered,after removing the 80’s print fabric, the guy told me off for not saving the horsehair!
