Speaking of German glass in Australia....

Several years ago I sold this vase through everyone's favorite online auction site. From the "Sea Life Collection", this "Fish" pattern vase by Carl Rotter of Lübeck, Germany should have been a prize I thought. I'd done enough investigation to know this was a quality item from a quality firm and fully expected it would be recognizable enough to attract multiple bidders. I listed it for a nickle less than the little I paid for it. Of course, that's what it sold for but it sold to a bidder in Australia who paid probably 2 1/2 times more for shipping than it cost for the item. The total was more in line with what I expected so hopefully it seemed a fair deal on that end. Such are the perils of online sales. I've sold enough stuff over the years to not trouble myself with regrets. I'm glad (and somewhat surprised) that I managed to save the pictures of this one.

As I remember it, this vase is a little less than 4" (around 95mm?) tall. It is dark amber cased wheel-cut to clear with a pattern that looks like guppies in root beer. Carl Rotter brought his trade from Silesia and established his glass house in Lübeck in 1948. It is still in family hands and operating today. Rotter Glass designs are well-known for the way patterns play through the glass.

It's a funky little number Harry. Glad you kept photos so we can see.
When I first started collecting glass I remember a comment from a collector that glass knowledge was hard gained, and there will always be surprises. I certainly am constantly surprised, and here is yet another company new to me. Thanks for that!
