I think I paid about $1.75 for this. It is 4 3/4"L, 2 3/4"W, 4 1/4"H. I was at a thrift shop that requires a minimum purchase amount to use a credit card and looked for about 30 minutes to find something I wanted to plump up my expenditure. I went there to buy a specific glass vase that I had been watching, which I grabbed in the first 2 minutes of being in the store. Ugh! I had finally settled on something I didn't really want and found this next to the cash register in a cart full of stuff that had not yet been put on the shelf. Sigh. I have never heard of Prestige (Pottery Co.?) and could find out nothing about them. I suspect that this is a 1953 Japanese import. Guessing the Roman numerals are the year, not a model number, but I could be wrong. This is a pretty small piece, but it has a hole in the bottom with a plastic stopper. Not really sure that it is meant to be used as a planter since it is so small. Just my best guess.

Ah- he's cute! He looks so surprised- I think Watchsearcher is right- it's to dispense yarn to prevent tangling?
Thanks for the idea Watchsearcher and LaurenRedmond! I looked at a lot of images of yarn dispensers and not sure how this would work as one. Virtually all of the yarn dispensers I saw were large enough to hold a full ball of yarn in an open top and had a hole in the front where the yarn was pulled out of the dispenser. This little cat/kitten thing is tiny. The glass yarn ball he is playing with is slightly smaller than a tennis ball, about 2.5" in diameter. It would not be possible to fit very much yarn into this, and it is also pretty light and it would not take much force to move it, so I am struggling with how it would be used as a yarn dispenser, but open to the idea. From what information I could find, a ball of yarn is about 4" in diameter, though I didn't find many sources for that. So how would this work as a yarn dispenser? Would it sit on top of a ball of yarn in, maybe a basket, and be pulled up through the bottom and out of the top?
Well perhaps for small bits of yarn? While working on intarsia (which is knitting in small sections of yarn at once) it might work? Or maybe for storing thing like yarn markers, small needles etc?
Back in my mom's day, you didn't toss leftover yarn even tho it wasn't enough to make a complete garment. They saved it for many uses.
I'm thinking the hole in the bottom is plenty big to stuff in several yards of a skein of leftovers (not a ball of yarn but soft fluffy yarn).
It could even hold ribbons. Whatever sticks out the hold needs to go along with the ball of yarn the cat is holding, so I'm convinced it's for yarn????
The little cat does look startled, like he just got caught unwinding the yarn!

It's a cute item...maybe for a ball of string or jute twine, also? I've seen some cat shaped string dispensers before...
@IronLace - I was happy to find it. I think string or twine is a definite possibility.

I picked one of these up yesterday and found this thread looking for more info.
Highly unlikely this is any kind of dispenser. It's too small to hold much of anything (knitting intarsia the colors need to hang to maintain tension) and unless it was affixed to a surface, when you pulled your yarn/string it would crash to the floor.
It could possibly be a receiver - sit it on the kitchen windowsill and put your odd pieces of string in it.
IMO, though, this is a vase.
