Hi all! Just picked up my first trunk ever! Any good tips on determining age? Not for value or anything. Just curious as I learn what I’m seeing. I am hoping to clean this piece up in the proper way and I would like to learn a bit more before I start anything. Covered in a canvas that is in fairly good shape. No
Big rips anyway. Began to veeeeeeeery gently clean the dirt from one spot with water and a soft rag, and the dark green color was clearly very delicate. Metal along the whole underside of the trunk.
So yeah, any thoughts or good websites to go to for aging and/or restoration tips? Happy to describe more if anyone has thoughts or questions!
    Thank you!!!

Early 1900's Flat top, if the canvas is in good shape , clean it, I use Murphy's oil soap on every thing, canvas and wood, works very well. Canvas can also be painted ,not a big fan of flat tops, early flat tops, late 1880's, I have found are all wood body's which is good, later flat tops, 1890's in to the 1900's have a lot of what I call a fiber like cardboard, especially the tops of the trunks, so if you are thinking of removing the canvas you might run in to this problem, so for this reason I stay away from most flat tops, any questions just holler, good luck, greendog.
