I've heard stuff like about the head also, I couldn't tell if any of the legends were based on real facts though. You're right about the over hyped lethality of the Gila, a "dart frog" is more deadly. Their venom isn't super toxic and you have to sit there and let them "chew" the venom into you like a coral snake. A lot of the hype is because it's ugly and scary looking, you just assume it's deadly.
