    I got this item out of my father in law's attic; the house was built in 1901 by his father. His father was a railroad man and I think perhaps it was something he used then. Any idea what it is? By the way, it is cast iron and probably went through a fire in the 50s.

      It might be an oil can that was used to fill the journal bearings boxes on the rolling stock and engine.

      These were used as lamps in the mines. It had a wick in the spout and fuel was oil or kerosene. I have a similar one from the lead and zinc mines here in Joplin, Mo.
