This 1 3-4"H x 2"W brooch shows a mother and baby elephant, their bodies pearly beige enamel, with white & champagne rhinestone accents, brown eyes and a faux pearl on Mom's head. By St John, founded in 1962 by Marie & Robert Grey, with entwined SJ logo on back

When I opened the CW page this morning, my eyes shot straight to this piece!
The enamel, the stones, the pearl, the intertwining trunks of Mama & Baby make
this piece a "show-stopper". St. John is new to me, but in the future I will be on the
look-out! I adore this brooch in every way!

Ahh- it's so sweet! Actually this is my favourite of your brooches! (I say that at seeing every one of your brooches!) Elephants are such great creatures anyway they make wonderful artistic pieces like this.

So cute Jenni - yes the famous Marie Grey known for knit suits. I met her during my time at the La Jolla newspaper. They had a store there. I remember seeing a lot of jewelry. I bet Madeleine Albright had some in her collection.

Thanks Eileen for the fantastic compliments, I am so glad you enjoyed this piece. I was immediately drawn to its charm, the mom & baby animal designs are so sweet, and I love that India type jewel on the forehead. St John was also new to me, except I remembered seeing exclusive clothing ads by that brand in fashion mags like Vogue and Bazaar, and turns out they also made costume jewelry

Thomas thank you for the super compliments, I'm really happy you liked this, it's kinda different right & they really are cute together I agree

Lauren you can say each is a favorite, to me that means my posts are improving, I never want you to think, oh here's Jenni again with the same old stuff lol! It is hard not to repeat myself with animals but I try, for example I recently found some classic glass animals from the 40s in unusual colors that I hope you enjoy in my future posts. Wonderful compliments my friend, thanx so much

Mary I would love to hear more about Marie Grey, for instance, was she the main model in her clothing ads, a pretty blonde woman? She also posed with a young blonde girl, maybe her daughter? I'm very impressed that you met her, did you also get some of her suits or other clothing, I used to see it in high end stores but a bit too pricey for me. If you know the dates she made animal pieces like this one I would love to know that too - I'm bombarding you with questions, sorry, that's the typical Sagittarian inquisitiveness lol

Phil, they sure would look good on a Las Vegas stage with their rhinestone sparkle! Thanks for the terrific compliment & creative scene for me

Very grateful for the love all

Thanks MrsT, I know, this was just an accidental find because the co. is new to me too, although I did recognize the name from fine clothing. Hoping that Mary can tell us more! Lovely compliment, really appreciate it

Jenni - I worked at the La Jolla newspaper from 1987-95....the ads she used for our newspaper were just logo ads. I remember big pins and other enamel jewelry in her store. I think your pin is around 1990+. I couldn't afford anything! But, the publisher of our newspaper had a pretty nice St. John knit suit - I do remember that. LOL. St. John clothes and jewelry was not my style. Now I appreciate it. And, I love your Sagittarius questions!

Thanks Mary for the super info about St John, I am psyched now to find more of their jewelry. What a dream job you had, I always wanted to be a journalist
    13. valentino97 valentino97, 10 months ago
Jenni....we should take this off CW just in case I swear LOL....The newspaper was a weekly for 5 different publications. I started out there as a graphic artist and well - it was a small paper and so after a few years I worked my way up to "WOW, a writer and editor!" It was so much fun, but it was also stressful because I didn't feel I had proper journalist skills. Our group included 4 different communities so we were always on deadline. THEN, I don't remember the exact day, but one day a week we were caught up and our publisher took us all to a nearby bar/cafe for drinks.

As for St. John, I met both Marie and Robert. They were always a little standoffish, stressful retail life? and I remember there was a lot of jewelry. LOL

Many thanks iggy for the love and appreciation, glad you liked my mom & baby Dumbos

Mary I love your last comment about working at the paper, may I keep it you didn't swear, will remove though if you ask again - you are so talented with doing graphic art, newspaper writing AND editing, super cool! And I love that the publisher would take you guys for a drink once a wk, occasionally I had a generous employer who would treat to buying lunch, after work drinks etc. Though my main 'career' was medical typist-transcriptionist, in early days I did a lot of temp work, doing receptionist and secretarial work at all sorts of co's, law offices, travel agencies, even for the racetrack investigators where FBI agents would stop by and we did reports of unlawful activities like horse doping, race fixing etc. When you're young you have a short attention span, I loved 'jumping around' lol
About St John, I think they were just snooty, in the ads she (or her model) had a nose in the air type look :)

Jenni - first off about St. John, I guess that was their image, but they had beautiful knits! It was a bit too classic for me then, I certainly appreciate it now.

About working, yes when we are young we are mostly concerned about making money to be on our own. I had a graphic arts degree so my short and long-term employment always in that field. Wow about your racetrack and the FBI! Happened to me too. I was employed at a company in FL that later was found to be connected w/Chicago mafia - rumours of money laundering and drug smuggling. Yes, I was young and I agree, that's why they hired me. (we would have to go off CW to talk about this, I was at the Mob Museum in Las Vegas where you are invited to record your experiences....I was still too scared after 30 years). Ha ha ha, possibly that was all my imagination!

Glad you enjoyed my elephant pair Pascale, many thanks for the wonderful compliments and love

Mary you and I have had some amazing work experiences, they were scary at the time but don't they make good stories for our friends now lol! Don't worry I would not have written about the mob either - once I was a temp sec'y in a construction trailer, was so terrified picked up my handbag at lunch & took off :)

Thanks ho2 for the love, it's always greatly appreciated and is very nice of you
