    kralik1928
    (202 items)

Some collectors of Czech glass might look at every photo in this post and say "what Kralik? - all I see is neat Czech export glass or Deco glass from the Bohemian region".
We don't usually buy a piece if our comfort level doesn't match our hunch. We cannot fully depend on attributions from museums or auctions (nobody's perfect).
Mostly Czech collectors buy what they like; Shoot first and sort them out later!
In light of the imperfect score from "experts and institutions" I fall back on my experience collecting thousands of images and visiting with curators, web sight experts and (YOU) the fellow collector. My method in Identifying pieces can vary but one of my favorite methods is to "Connect the dots".

    This is how it works:
1, A mystery piece pops up (I buy the piece)
2, I connect it by decor to a piece with a different shape
3, I connect that piece to another shape that connects to yet another decor...
4, "BINGO". Nobody can argue about a signature piece that everyone knows is Kralik

Of course this has to be within your comfort level and I respect people who find other connection or NO connections at all.
I will show this line of thinking and link it to another post under CW member Jericho - REASON: these are my pieces and I don't like to use any images of pieces I don't own on this page.

    1. Lidded jar with double-cased glass with Mica, note the mica particles have cobalt powders powders around each flake, further note that one of the layers is transparent and the other is semi-opaque.

    2. A square form with triangular shapes in relief. The black powder is so fine that it looks airbrushed

    3. Wide bottom piece in red/white zebra canes with cobalt powders between the canes

    4. Triangle foot honeycomb decor made with white confetti base and cobalt powder design (matches foot nicely)

... so tune in as I make the connections and maybe we can agree but if not I wanna hear about it!

P.s, This brings me to an interesting thought why do we have to put labels on everything? There is a tab down below that is forcing me to call these pieces Bohemian Art Glass (lol)

You GOT me! That green jar is scrumptious. Kralik it is.
    2. philmac51 philmac51, 5 years ago
Yep.... it's that blue foot that does it for me.

I would like to see some other examples in the decor of the green piece if you have those images.

The lidded candy dish is my fav. Never seen any thing like it. Always amazed by the seemingly endless variety of deco Czech glass. Nice!

Thanx TOD, I have the connection another way but ok- that totally works

Haha, I’m still tap dancing on number 4
    7. truthordare truthordare, 5 years ago
youre welcome, number 4 has other decors in the Kralik glass family I think. I also found another number 1 in the Iris caned decor, maybe that is the one you have.
That splayed tooled blue foot is remarkable. That splayed tooled blue foot is remarkable. Number 4 foot maybe: https://nebula.wsimg.com/6ea65c39baeba315ebf890bb26628d29?AccessKeyId=3A908495ACD7ABD44DFC&disposition=0&alloworigin=1

thanx TOD, that red piece might not be enough... I may not be able to prove the last piece because there are many loose ends but I hope the box of examples that connect the last pic are strong enough.... I've gone back and fourth on the punched in shapes because the pontil is usually different than most pontilled Kralik

Jericho, I understand. I remind myself that Kralik had multiple glass plants, and a long history of production, so these slight differences might not mean a different maker. I have many pieces with that blue glass tooled foot, I think it was hand worked of course, so liable to have inconsistencies. I have a vase in similar shape as number 4, and have a big assortment BB ad with number 4, so comfortable with the Kralik ID for 2 out of 4 of your pieces.

Here are more info links for number 4.
3rd in from left on last row- shape is of different vase

TOD, the glass foot can help identify that honeycomb as Kralik but I wouldn’t trust it by itself. Glass application techniques were shared between many companies
    11. kralik1928 kralik1928, 5 years ago
TOD, I’m trying to show subtleties in the technique - even though the companies all had honeycombs I’m sure Craig can spot a Welz honeycomb and not confuse it with an unknown one or a Kralik. As a shortcut here are some tips:

Ruckl- Large honeycomb made with confetti
Kralik- Large to medium honeycomb made with powders
Welz- Small honeycomb made with powders and fine confetti

To me it’s clear as day but it has to check out with shape, size, thickness in glass (as you know well) and colors.
    12. kralik1928 kralik1928, 5 years ago
Lastly (without taking sides) I know Craig has his Welz documentation pretty solid- he has only shared parts of these details with the public- I hope over time (or a book getting published) you will see how much there is this company.

With what I have to assume was extreme deleting by CW staff, Jericho's comment above now has no context.
    14. jericho jericho, 5 years ago
Yeah, but I'm told I'm losing "making sense in the brain"- could be that too
    15. welzebub welzebub, 5 years ago
No, I think it is the 6 or 8 deleted comments that did it.... :-)
