This helmet was the standard M-1 hemet used during the Vietnam war. This particular helmet was made for airborne troops, and the inner liner snaps into the steel shell to prevent the liner and shell from being seperated during a jump. The helmet cover is the Mitchell pattern and is original to the helmet. The cover has quite a bit of faded soldier grafitti on it. Some examples are Arkansas, God is My Jumpmaster, 82nd Airborne, and marks in which each mark denotes a jump from an airplane, most being from a C 130 plane. The soldier's jump wings, or parachutist badge is pinned on the elastic camouflage band that was meant to hold foliage while in the field. More often the band held bandages, lighters, small, plastic, insect repellant bottles, and gun oil bottles. Whatever you needed it to hold it did.

You have some great military helmets. I have the same helmet I use to play wear as a kid when we would play. I have been watching the items you post and I must say thanks for sharing. We have an antique store and auction house here in Bryan Texas. If you are interested we have an auction this Sunday with quite a bit of military items. There is a real nice German helmet and some others as well. Here is the site to view pictures http://www.ssattic.com we can take phone/absentee bids. There is contact information on the website if you are interested. I now CW does not want advertising of items for sale but at the same time where do we collectors get or stuff.
      Have a great day.
