Hello everyone!!
Here are both volumes 1 and 2 of Public And Private Life Of Animals by P-J Stahl and illustrated by J.J. Grandville. The books are a series of short stories of the animals telling the stories of the events in their lives. The stories are so imaginative and incredibly well written. Some refer to these stories as some of the finest literature ever written. These are original French editions and in very nice condition. They're leather bound and dated 1842. This books were eventually translated to English years later. But, this is the oldest edition of this book I've ever seen.
J.J Grandville's illustrations of anthropomorphic animals are truly amazing. These books are filled with his incredible illustrations. I've wanted these books for years and my wife and sons gifted me with these on Christmas day. I have the English version in pdf form, but I'm truly grateful to own a set of these wonderful French books. I may post more of J.J. Grandville's illustrations from these wonderful books.

I see no reason to believe them not 1840s. Boards are right. Paper's right (using a cotton-blend). Printing and engraving looks right. Spines may(?) have been redone professionally but look fine too.

Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard, known by the pseudonym of J. J. Grandville. Illustrator, printmaker, painter, draughstman and caricaturist. Born in Nancy, he moved to Paris in 1825. He published different series of satires (pen lithographs to be hand-coloured) such as 'Les Métamorphoses du jour' and the 'Voyage pour l'éternité'. From 1830 until 1835 he became one ofthe main contributors to 'La Caricature' and 'Le Charivari'. As Charles Philipon, he satirized the governement of Louis-Philippe. The lithographs for 'La Caricature' were executed in crayon and not in pen and are close to the works of Traviès and Daumier. Not all lithographs by Grandville were executed by him: printers working for Philipon such as Eugène Forest transferred the designs to the stone.
From 1836 he moved from lithography to wood-engraving, for which he produced numerous designs for publishers until his death.

About 30 years ago I was unemployed and in dire straits, so close to starving and being homeless, that I actually got to the point where I had to sell my most beloved books to buy food after I had sold everything else of value that I had. I took them to a bookstore on 15th Ave on Capitol Hill in Seattle where Frank Herbert used to speak and do readings when he was in town, but I can't remember the name of it. The owner said he wasn't buying any books but said he would take a look at what I had, anyway, and then his eyes got big when he saw them. He said that they were books the store should really have and he bought every one of them. I still mourn their loss. I did keep back one book which I was able to hold on to and I may post it later.
So sorry to hear that you had to sell your book collection due to tough times. Even today, so many folks are experiencing this during the COVID pandemic. My family and I have been very blessed during this pandemic. I can't stand knowing that folks are going hungry all around us. We donate money to our local food bank, but some folks are still a bit too proud to go to the food bank for help.
