I’m posting for a friend- we’re hoping to learn a little about the Aunt Jemima and Uncle Mose salt and pepper shaker set. If anyone can tell us a little bit about them, we’d sure appreciate it! Thanks in advance!
Just curious first of all
do you find these offensive, in anyway ?
I don’t feel personally offended, no- but I do understand others who may/or do find them offensive. I certainly don’t mean to upset anyone at all, I just wanted to help my friend research them a bit.
BrandyBronco , I only say becouse I posted a few sets and I
struggled with putting them on ,but there were just so nice and new and I thought it was cool to have something that old from 1949 still in the box
But it is a sad History
Not at all offended because I grew up with these years ago. The originals were cast iron. They could be purchased at the local A&P Tea Store or if you were shopping on Friday night (payday) there would be a woman dressed as Aunt Jemima cooking pancakes and giving away with samples of the syrup on them. If you ate the sample and bought their product you would get a Aunt or the butler cast iron bank free. Every house in town had them back in the late 40's and 50's. Today there are more reproductions than originals floating around.
I'm sure CW had a post about this very thing some time ago, but I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone else remember it?

I found some really CW interesting articles, and posts, Aunt Jemima, Black advertising etc. Easy to find if anyone wants to read more. Not what I was looking for, but very insightful - the advertising proofs alone are horrible.
Hi there Brandy! Most people do not find these offensive. Some do and everyone is entitled to their own feelings for sure. If you look up vintage black Americana, you should be able to find lots of info. There are many famous people that collect items like these. I had a set in blue from the 30's that I purchased at a live auction, it was my first auction like that and when I saw them, I just had to have them. Geeze, that was 35 years ago! And so exciting. I did let them go as I don't collect the shakers any longer, but they fetched a pretty penny! The best way to tell if shakers are authentically old is the bottom hole. They are never perfectly round.
