    Unique Skiing Prize Medal

This unique skiing first prize medal is not dated but was issued in 1934. This silver plated bronze medal was awarded to the first place winner of the Watzmann mountain downhill skiing competition just outside of Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps. The medal is an impressive 45.5mm in diameter and weighs 28.9grams with a plain edge. The obverse shows a skier racing down hill between two small flags. The reverse has the engraved inscription “Watzmann-Abf. (abfahrt) SA (could mean Super America) u. (und) SS (could mean Social Security) Kl. (Class) 1 Pr. (1st prize) all within an oak wreath. The medal is not named but could possibly be discovered in local newspapers of that time if any could be found.

Thanks Newfld, I like the old fashioned 1920-30's style pants. I can't remember ever seeing them on medals before.

For those who are wondering, the Watzmann is the snow covered mountain in the background of this picture post card.
