Picked up my first alternating colored wood slat trunk the other day.... Very descent shape with the interior complete. No Makers label. Possibly & more than likely by Martin Maier. It measures 35" from outside to outside of the applied wood surface so the sub structure is probably a 34". It is 20" deep and stands at 30" tall. A few things different about this trunk, it has "Pre" Patent date F.W. Beckwith hinges which would normally read patented 1885. All the applied alternating colored surface slats are double grooved or beaded as shown in several photos. The lock is patent dated 1883. A G. Crouch patented 1886 lid lift. Taylor #2 Latches. I never thought I would find one up in my neck of the woods but simply by chance did I find it. Needless to say I braved a snow storm and made the 2 1/2 hr trip to the north country and bought it.

WOW ! great trunk, well worth the trip, never seen one with the beaded slats, very unique. Is it a Martin Maier ? based on what I have been told by some of the top trunk aficionados, Jim Cardoza, Marvin Miller, Ben Brown, I would say yes, as you know I have an oak slat trunk much like this one, without the beaded slats, but it has the F.W. Beckwith hinges just like yours, I was assured that it was a Maier, but why the Beckwith hinges ? I was told that it was possible that Maier ran out of there hinges at the time and sent a runner over to Beckwith to get a pair of their hinges, as they were in close proximity of each other in Detroit, now that is possible, but it still lingers in the back of my mind, without a label, MM hinges or their signature MM hardware do we know 100% for sure that it is Martin Maier, the answer is no, so we have to rely on the experience of our fellow trunkers, and I do, never the less it's a fantastic trunk, and I'am very glad you got it Tom, Brian.

Thanks for the love and input Brian. I take it Beckwith just was responsible for this type of hinge... but never made trunks? I have the other Beckwith hinged trunk with the patent date we talked about before that has the overall MM flavor and look, but no MM hardware and no label. They don't seem to be very plentiful out there.

Every time I see this kind of trunk with the rounded top, I hear Forrest Gump say "Jen-nay"!!! LOL... the only other thing I personally know, is that I've had a lot of different kinds, none with this top though. There's a lot of trunksters here that will see this soon! It's absolutely gorgeous!

Thanks Mike78 ..Much appreciated! But I think in this case it found me..lol I know Brian had a similar experience with one of his, while looking at one trunk photo saw in the back ground a MM slated trunk ( I believe) and now owns it.
