I just got this brooch. I need some help on this one-there are three tiny hallmarks on this piece. I’m pretty sure the last one is a sideways anchor. The first could be a lion or swan or whale?? Don’t know about the second. Has a C clasp so very old. Please help-any ideas? I circled them in last pic. Hope fully you can see pics, they were hard to photograph!

Wow! Was it buried or something? I think you are right, the middle one could be the letter for the year. Looks like an X with the Birmingham 'lion passant' and date for 1897. The shape of the cartouches used is also correct.Nice find.

Truthordare, thanks for the quick response. I purchased online, so don’t know about its previous history. Could it be sterling?

It would have to be with those hallmarks, I don't know if the surface was treated with something, but I bet you would find sterling silver underneath that coating.
