This trunk has a top-level tray. It's all covered (inside) with old gaudy thick paper. I have no idea who owned it before, because my mama has always had it. She and my cousin refinished it and it has been used as a "coffee table." I have been using it, since both my parents have died, to store pictures, old papers, etc. I don't know much about the period that it was made, because of conflicting information. Thanks in advance for any information that you might provide.

Late 1890's to early 1900's give or take a bit steamer trunk, this is a true steamer trunk although many people wrongly call all trunks steamer trunks. Steamer trunks were a specific size and shape, anywhere in the 30 to 40 inch long and not much more than 14 inches high, not every one had large state rooms on the ocean liners, most had small cramped rooms, the steamer trunk was designed to fit under the bunks in the rooms as space was limited on steamer ships, hence the name steamer trunk, all other larger trunks are simply travel trunks. greendog.

Thanks, Greendog! Someone told me that it was a "Civil War" trunk, but I couldn't verify that.

No, definitely not a civil war trunk, greendog
