Wondering if any basalt knowledgeable folks can tell me if that is what this is. It is hollow and the outsides are high relief, as you can plainly see. Measure 9" long and approx 6" tall and weighs 1.75 pounds. I just don't know at all what this is made of or when, or where it might have come from. Sure would appreciate any help. Thanks........

Hi, Mark. I have one similar At first I thought mine was ebony. Then realized the legs are hollow, but body seems more solid. Legs sound like metal when tapped. Mine is 5 inches tall, 1 pound 5 ounces. Mine had inserts for tusks which are missing. I was assuming India. Look forward to hearing more about yours so I can learn more about mine!

Thanks Shar. Just looked on ebay at over 750 listings and didn't see ANYTHING like this. You could be right about India, based on the dress and the lion/gazelle chase scene on blanket. Hmmm. Maybe someone will identify. I will let you know if they do...

Hi, Mark. I'm posting mine now. I searched more and found a couple of possibilities, none as detailed as mine or years. Lacquered covered brass, black bronze. Yours has a copper or bronze color at the feet correct?

      Hey Char,
Mine feels and sounds like it is hollow in the body and is some kind of ceramic or ???. It shines like it is basalt, but i can't imagine how it would get hollow. Its like someone made a mold, poured liquid something into it, then broke the mold, like lost wax process, but it doesn't feel like a man-made substance. Weird. im gonna go look at your post, if i can find it.

Hi, Mark. So funny, I have another incredible elephant family figurine I have always thought was ironwood or ebony. After our posts I re-examined. It also appears to have hollow legs on the elephants! If you find out anything new, please share - and I'll do the same.
