The black handled one I never happened to see before. The two claws on the under side are what I hadn't seen. I assume they were for some type of pry open lid. The ratcheting one is for jar lids. I found them in an old box of utensils that belonged to my mother in law. Anyone know what lid the black handled one opened? It doesn't work on paint can type lids, little prong on the side is for those.

      COOL COOL COOL fhrjr2!!! :-) :-) :-)

Believe it or not, I *do* have one around here someplace with a bizness-end just like yours (I think) though mine is on a long (~10"?) wooden handle instead. I've always guessed it was meant to lift the 'sealed' lids (that go under the threaded rings, which one could remove with the *other* one of your openers?) off of home-canning "Mason jars" but don't know for sure...??

Next question, where the h*ll have I now put that thing...it isn't in the kitchen jar with the rest of my 'wood handled utensils' where it probably should be...so another 'reconnaissance mission' into the piles of boxes until I find it again...??

Thanks all for the comments and the link. Five gallon bucket sounded good until I went out and tried it. Not enough distance to get leverage to pry it upward. Although it might work on the smaller 2 gallon bucket. I have one and will give that a try. The two jaws on it are shaped down to a point on both outer edges. I thought perhaps a 55 gallon metal barrel with a pressed on top but I sure don't have one laying around.

great answers. the best can opener ever invented was the P-38 I used it over in Nam!!!
      Army runs on it's stomach!!
Not so funny but funny story!!! I just got to Nam and was running shotgun on a 5 ton tractor trailer on a ammo convoy to the Black Virgin Mountain!!! We were driving slow thru a village. Little kids running along begging for food!! I threw a k ration can to a kid!! and a older kid knocked him down and took it!!! The driver stopped the truck and said give him a can from the k rations case under the seat!!!
I pulled out Ham and Lima beans!!! He called the big kid over and said to you want it??? then threw it and hit him right between the eyes!!! The little kid picked up both cans and took off!!! That was my first memory of Nam. Please delete if you want!!

No need to delete it. I still have a couple P-38's even have one in the original brown wrapper. I used them in Europe before Nam but when I got to Nam in 68 I learned to carry more than one. Always had one taped to my dog tags for emergencies.

I was there 66-67 before the sh-t hit the fan!!! we all went over as a Supply Batt. We bulldozed out the jungle and built supply dumps and refer sites in Long Binh!!
When we left it was Westmorelands headquarters!!! So I had it OK!!
      Thank you for your service!!!
