Can anyone help me figure out what this piece was originally used for? Has a little cubby for tools or something.

Hi Lorriebednar, that is/was the bench (player's seat) from a pipe organ console -- its legs are splayed outward in order for it to sit over the pedalboard on the floor, and the shelf under its top is often found holding music books/hymnals/pencils/etc.
They also make nifty 'sofa tables', as they're usually just the right shape/size for that too...?? ;-) :-)

The "hole " is probably for sheet music and this bench is shown its purpose in your pictures, probably for the 70's or so.
Also agree w/PhilDMorris. The additional pic you found is of an ALLEN model electronic organ of about that vintage, and its bench appears to be of an identical design. The 'cubby' under the seat (which would normally face 'into' the console out of view, just as seen there) is indeed for music/etc storage, and the wider lower crosspiece serves as a 'heel rest' for the organist, you might have noticed when you refinished the piece (?) a little bit of seemingly unusual wear to the its inside edge that wasn't also on the other side.
Additionally, similar models of that style/era of Allen electronic organ have all now practically reached (if not passed long ago) the end of their useful lives (irregardless of whether they actually still 'work' or not) so anybody that might wanna think about "restoring" one will soon discover they can buy 2 or 3 brand new imitation organs just like it for the same price tag. Oddly enough, when they thusly get unceremoniously chopped loose from their wiring harnesses and hauled to the dumpster (to make way for the shiny 'new one') nobody ever also throws *the bench* away...?? ;-)
[and in honesty, I'll admit I personally own ~ half dozen various 'organ benches' myself, saved from various consoles that have otherwise "went away" during my own career...they *are* very handy sofa tables, plant stands, etc. etc. etc...?!)
